Timber Cut Sizes

Traditionally in the UK we use Imperial measures in Inches to describe the depth and width of timber (even though we use metric measures in Meters to describe lengths).

Timber is actually cut to metric measures in millimetres which approximate to the traditional imperial descriptions. The following gives the actual cut sizes for timber:

2” x 2” / 45mm x 45mm

2” x 3” / 45mm x 70mm

2” x 4” / 45mm x 95mm

2” x 5” / 45mm x 120mm

2” x 6” / 45mm x 150mm

2” x 7” / 45mm x 170mm

2” x 8” / 45mm x 200mm

2" x 9" / 45mm x 228mm

3” x 4” / 70mm x 95mm

Battons are cut to 50mm x 25mm, 19mm x 38mm
